Kota Kinabalu: The 33rd Borneo Safari drew 800 participants and 280 four-wheel drive vehicles from around the world, underscoring Sabah’s growing reputation as a hub for extreme off-road adventure.
Held over eight days, the expedition covered several interior districts, including Nabawan, before heading to Tongod and Telupid.
Participants from the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Thailand, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Russia, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Japan and Brunei Darussalam took part, reaffirming the event’s global appeal.
Borneo Safari 2025 Race Manager Datuk James Wong said international participation continued to increase each year as the Borneo Safari was regarded as the most challenging four-wheel drive expedition in the region.
“Many foreign participants join because this is the only extreme four-wheel drive adventure of its kind,” he said.
Nabawan District Officer Marshal Anthony said the influx of visitors had opened up wider economic opportunities for communities along the route, particularly small traders, food operators, homestay owners and rural tourism operators.
He said the event had brought tangible benefits to residents in remote areas that seldom receive such attention.
