The National Registration Department (NRD) has issued a firm reminder that Malaysians are strictly prohibited from using someone else’s MyKad for any purpose, including purchasing subsidised fuel.

This includes the MyKad of spouses, children, or any close family members.

MyKad must only be used by its rightful owner

According to NST, NRD director-general Datuk Badrul Hisham said that the MyKad is an official identification document and cannot be used, held, or represented by another individual under any circumstances.

He stressed that this rule applies even within immediate families.

As such, all transactions conducted at counters, including the purchase of subsidised fuel, must be carried out personally by the eligible MyKad holder,” he said.

A criminal offence

According to Badrul Hisham, the prohibition is clearly stated under Regulation 25 of the National Registration Regulations 1990.

Under this law, using or possessing another person’s identity card is considered an offence and may result in legal action.

He also urged the public not to misuse government subsidies, emphasising that strict compliance is necessary to ensure fairness.

The NRD further cautioned Malaysians against lending or handing over their MyKad to others for any purpose.

Doing so could expose individuals to legal consequences, even if the intention was to help someone else.

The reminder comes after a recent case in Kelantan, where a man allegedly used four different MyKad belonging to other individuals to purchase more than 100 litres of subsidised petrol.

The incident has since drawn public attention, with the NRD confirming that it has stepped in to investigate.

Authorities have described such actions as a serious offence and warned that strict enforcement measures will be taken against those found guilty.
