Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil says Neto deserved the captaincy for defeat to Brighton.

With skipper Lloyd Kelly absent due to a calf injury, goalkeeper Neto took the armband for the first time since joining Cherries from Barcelona last summer.

It was an eye-catching move, given Adam Smith, who normally takes the responsibility in Kelly's absence, was also part of the starting XI. The 31-year-old has led the team out on 12 occasions this season.

Asked why goalkeeper Neto was given the armband at the Amex, O'Neil told the Daily Echo: I think Neto is a leader.

He's fantastic with all the players.

He's a good guy. I like what he brings. It was just Neto could lead the boys on Saturday."
