• Nine people, mostly children, have died after getting into difficulty in open water across the UK following days of record-breaking temperatures.
• The Royal Life Saving Society urged Britons to 'stop and think' before entering water, noting that despite warmer air, water temperatures remain very cold.
• England and Wales experienced their hottest May day on record, with temperatures reaching 35.1C in Kew Gardens and 32.9C in Cardiff Bute Park.
