Boy almost dies after balloon gets stuck in throat

A MOTHER recently almost lost her son during his birthday celebration - all because of a balloon that was yet to be blown up.

Taking to social media, Nurul Huda Zulkhairi said the incident occurred on May 20 and was meant to be a happy day for her son.

"We invited all his friends and teachers from kindergarten to primary school. My son was very happy because his best friend from kindergarten when we were living in Bertam was also there.

"While my husband and I were busy entertaining the guests, my son was playing and running around with his best friend.

"Before the incident, my son was sitting at my table drinking water that he had mixed with two flavours," she said.

However, halfway through the celebrations, things turned chaotic when Nurul's sister-in-law informed her husband that Uwais was wheezing.

Nurul's husband did not think much about it and went to get an inhaler as Uwais had asthma attacks in the past.

"Suddenly my brother-in-law (Nabil) ran to my husband with my son who was turning blue in his arms ... his heart had stopped beating.

"My husband and his friend did several procedures. They thought my son might have choked on food. However, after trying CPR and using a technique that I don't remember the name of to get the food out, it still failed.

"They then rushed my son to the hospital while my husband continued to perform CPR in the back seat," she said.

When they arrived at the hospital, she said the doctors and nurses took over and worked hard to save the boy.

"When they wanted to intubate him, they saw that there was a balloon in his airway. The doctor quickly removed the balloon and continued to do CPR ... thank God my son's life was saved.

"Thank you to the ED team at Hospital Kulim who attended to my son so quickly. Thank you also to the PICU team at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah who treated Uwais so meticulously.

"Everything happened so fast. Apparently, Uwais was joking with his best friend, putting the balloon in his mouth and while running around, my son might have choked and suffocated," she said.

Nurul said she was sharing her story as a warning to all parents.

"Small things that we take for granted, like a balloon, can be the cause of a big disaster if not monitored.

"Don't take it lightly, because I almost lost my son," she said. - May 23, 2025
