A harrowing incident unfolded in Malaysia on July 12 when a 13-year-old boy collapsed after consuming biscuits laced with poison. The tragic event occurred at a banana plantation near Kampung Air Putih in Terengganu.

Reports from Malaysian media outlets Harian Metro, Kosmo, and New Straits Times indicate that the incident happened around 2 PM. The young boy, the fourth among five siblings, was heading to a nearby river for a fishing trip, his father shared with Harian Metro.

As the boy made his way to the river, he passed through a farm and noticed biscuits placed in a plastic bag hanging from a pole. Unaware of the danger, he ate the biscuits and soon after collapsed. His father speculated that the food had been poisoned and placed there to deter monkeys from entering the garden.

The unconscious boy was discovered on the ground by a friend's father, who acted swiftly, taking him to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, the boy is now in stable condition, though he remains under medical care and observation.

Kemaman District Police Chief Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan stated that the incident is currently under investigation. The case is being examined under Section 31 (1) of the Child Act 2001, which addresses offenses related to child abuse, neglect, abandonment, or exposure. This legal framework aims to ensure that those responsible for such negligent and harmful acts are held accountable.

This disturbing event marks the second such incident involving poisoned food in recent weeks. Just days before, two brothers tragically lost their lives after consuming keropok, a type of Malaysian snack that had been laced with rat poison. The poisoned keropok had been hung on a fence by a neighbor to ward off pests in a nearby garden. Both boys collapsed after ingesting the poisoned food and sadly did not survive.

These incidents have raised significant concerns about the dangers posed by poisoned food left in accessible places. Such practices, intended to protect crops from animals, can have devastating and unintended consequences when they come into contact with humans, especially children.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid consuming any food found in open or unmonitored areas. They also stress the importance of reporting any suspicious items to the police to prevent further tragedies.

The community in Kampung Air Putih is left grappling with these senseless acts, calling for greater awareness and stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The health and safety of children and the broader public must be a paramount concern, ensuring that such preventable tragedies are avoided at all costs.
