In a bizarre case that has shocked both Malaysia and China, an 18-year-old Chinese student from the National University of Singapore has been charged in Malaysia for faking his own abduction in an attempt to extort 5 million yuan (approximately RM2.9 million) from his wealthy parents. The young man’s elaborate scheme, aided by a 23-year-old friend, eventually unraveled, landing both in legal trouble.
The incident began when the teenager and his accomplice staged the kidnapping at a hotel on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur. The older friend took charge of communicating with the teen’s mother, making video calls from the hotel room and sending disturbing footage showing the teenager bound, gagged, and apparently assaulted. The goal was to convince the boy’s mother that he had been abducted and that a large ransom had to be paid into a Chinese bank account.
Initially, the act seemed convincing enough to alarm the mother, prompting her to take action. However, as authorities became involved, inconsistencies in the story surfaced. A police report eventually led to swift intervention by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), who arrested the alleged kidnapper and “rescued” the victim. Further investigation exposed the truth—that the kidnapping was a staged performance carefully planned by the boy himself in collaboration with his friend.
The duo has been formally charged at the Kuala Lumpur Court under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which addresses fraudulent activity, and Section 511 for attempting to commit a criminal offence. During the court appearance, both individuals pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.
Following their plea, the court granted each of them bail set at RM30,000. As a condition for release, both were required to surrender their passports and secure two Malaysian guarantors each.
Authorities have scheduled the next hearing for May 17, where further proceedings will determine the outcome of this deceptive and alarming case.
