A woman in Yunnan, China, has been hailed a hero after her quick actions saved a child from drowning at a hotel pool. What makes her story even more remarkable is that she was in the middle of her skincare routine when fate intervened.
On February 10, 28-year-old Peng was at the hotel with her children, visiting a friend. Enjoying a quiet moment by the pool, she had just applied a sheet mask when chaos suddenly erupted. A little girl had fallen into the pool and was pulled out by her panicked mother. However, the child was unresponsive, her face turning blue.
A crowd gathered, but no one took action. Seeing the urgency of the situation, Peng immediately called for emergency responders and began administering CPR. Dressed in a traditional cheongsam and still wearing her sheet mask, she performed chest compressions until the child finally expelled water and started breathing again.
“The moment I heard the little girl cry, my whole body started shaking,” Peng later shared in a video.
About three minutes later, the emergency rescue team arrived and took over. The child was then taken to the hospital for further medical attention. Thankfully, she survived the terrifying ordeal.
Peng's courageous act was captured in a video that quickly went viral on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. Netizens praised her for her composure and selflessness, dubbing her the "Facial Mask Heroine."
Reflecting on the incident, Peng admitted she had not planned to be at the hotel that evening.
“I originally wanted to visit the Chinese Academy of Sciences and go swimming at night, but I changed my mind and went to the hotel instead. If we had stuck to the original plan, we wouldn’t have been at the pool, and none of this would have happened.”
Despite her heroism, Peng urged people not to put all the blame on the parents. Instead, she emphasized the importance of ensuring children’s safety, especially in outdoor environments.
Her swift action and knowledge of first aid undoubtedly saved a life that night, proving that sometimes, everyday moments can turn into extraordinary acts of heroism.
