KOTA BELUD: A quarrel sparked by jealousy over a girl led to a fight that ended with the arrest of eight teenage boys, including seven secondary school students, in Kota Belud.
The teenagers, aged between 14 and 18, were detained at around 2pm on Monday after police received a report regarding the incident, which occurred earlier the same day.
Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said the fight allegedly took place near the Tamu Roundabout and was reported to police at 1am.
“Initial investigations revealed that the altercation was triggered by jealousy involving one of the suspects’ girlfriends,” he said when contacted.
The case is being investigated under Section 47 of the Penal Code for rioting and disturbing public peace.
If convicted, offenders may face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
Shahrudin urged the public not to speculate or circulate videos of the incident, as doing so may hinder the investigation.
“Sharing speculative information or footage of the fight may interfere with police investigations,” he warned.
He also urged any witnesses to come forward with information that could assist the investigation, either by visiting the nearest police station or contacting the investigating officer, Sergeant Railey Samiar, at 016-8143490.
