Brazil’s Supreme Court approves Jair Bolsonaro’s temporary release from prison to undergo a medically necessary hernia operation on Christmas Day.

BRASÍLIA: Brazil’s Supreme Court has granted former president Jair Bolsonaro temporary release from prison to undergo surgery.

The court approved his transfer to a hospital on Wednesday for an operation scheduled for Christmas Day.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorised the request after a medical review deemed the surgery necessary.

Bolsonaro, 70, is currently serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup after his 2022 election loss.

He requires surgery for an inguinal hernia, a condition involving a protrusion in the groin area.

The procedure will be performed at the DF Star private clinic in the capital, where he had another operation in April.

The far-right leader has faced ongoing health issues since being stabbed during the 2018 campaign.

He has been detained at federal police headquarters in Brasília since November.

Bolsonaro maintains his innocence, claiming he is a victim of political persecution.
