Our Sunday breakfast group was all set for an early weekly get together at VCR on Prophet's Birthday, thinking of that crunchy delicious soft shell crab burger that we last enjoyed a couple of months earlier.
But when we arrived there was a row of staff in their black outfits on a bench lined up against the wall outside the cafe. They looked like they were in mourning. Who died?
The door was ajar and chairs were still stacked atop tables not ready to welcome guests.
We were greeted at the entrance, "Good morning. Sorry we're closed. We were robbeed last night!" The supervisor told us. Strange.
Never heard of a restaurant being robbed even during Covid-19. It probably means that hard times are ahead. The economy must be bad to make criminals target small cafes like VCR.
We turned around marched to Telawi 2 heading for another favourite cafe in the neighbourhood, the Yeast Bistronomy.

Eggs Florentine is one of the best on the menu.
We love the classic eggs Florentine the way it is served here. It's made with spinach, mushrooms poached eggs and then topped with cheese sauce before being baked in a ceramics bowl served piping hot.
They offer a pètit pain rolls in multi gran or wholemeal or made from plain white flour.
We opted for multi grain variery over white rolls sliced, toasted and served hot with salted President butter.

I normally savour the top of the dish scraping off the cooked cheese atop the eggs with pieces of toasted rolls. It has an acquired taste of cheese blended with milky sauce flavoured by the spinach and sliced mushrooms.
I would wait to the very end of the meal before breaking the yolk of the poached eggs to dip the slightly cooked gooey yellow stuff out with pieces of cruncy bread. That way I almost always avoid spilling the runny yolk all over my shirt.
It's just delicious, definitely better than having plain half boiled eggs with soya sauce, the "kopi tiam" way!
I had black coffee while others had flat white to go with the meal.

Then someone ordered freshly made French tarts as deserts. But after the savoury eggs Florentine they were just a tiny bit sweet for my tastebuds. Some of the tarts were wasted that morning.
But overall the breakfast was excellent and the company as always illuminating to hear what everyone has been up to and what their travel plans were in coming weeks.
Our avid adventurer in the group Rozana is off to India while Larry Lambert is already on his way to Chiangmai Thailand.

But we missed our soft shell burgers at the VCR on Prophet's Birthday when the cafe was unfortunately robbed. Well, there's always next Sunday!
