In the statement released today, the Pardons Board asserted that Najib has received a partial royal pardon for his involvement in the SRC International case, allowing him to finish his prison term on 23 August 2028, which is less than two years from now.

However, if the reduced RM50 million fine is unpaid, his jail sentence will be added to another year, with his release being on 23 August 2029.

The meeting marked one of Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin’s final official duties before he stepped down as the position of Malaysia’s king on January 31. He passed on the role to Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar as part of the country’s distinct rotation system for its nine royal state households.

In July 2020, the High Court found Najib guilty of 3 counts of criminal breach of trust, three counts of money laundering, and one count of abuse of power, resulting in a 12-year jail sentence and an unpaid RM210 million fine.
