In a tragic turn of events, it has been reported by local newspaper China Press that a fatal accident had occurred near the popular hilltop tourist destination of Genting Highlands. The crash was said to have occurred earlier this afternoon at 1.20pm at a corner of a road leading downhill 4.8 kilometres away from the resort.
Tour van crashes into barrier at Genting Highlands
Upon receiving reports of the accident, emergency responders from the Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue Department were immediately dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations. Photos of the incident have since began circulating over local social media, showing the wreckage of the van against a concrete barrier.
A subsequent update from China Press claims that 6 of the victims including the driver have reportedly perished at the scene of the accident, while 9 people were injured. An unnamed source told the newspaper that the van was allegedly chartered by a Penang travel company.
UPDATE: As of 5.55pm, the death toll from the tragedy has risen to 7 people.
The accident was believed to have occurred when the driver had lost control of the van and crashed into the barrier when travelling away from Genting Highlands. Bodies of the deceased have been transported to Bentong Hospital.
