A man who was questioned in Pennsylvania in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, New York City police said Monday.
Mangione was identified in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania after a patron at the fast food joint apparently recognized him from the images circulated by the NYPD following last week’s shooting and alerted police.
He was carrying a ghost gun, a suppresser, “multiple fraudulent IDs,” including one the NYPD believes was used by the gunman, and a handwritten, three-page manifesto that was critical of the health care system. Authorities also recovered clothing and masks that are “consistent with” those seen on the suspect in photos.
Mangione was arrested on firearm charges, but has not been charged in the fatal shooting of the CEO outside a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan last Wednesday. He is, however, considered to be a “strong person of interest in the shooting that shook our city,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a Monday press conference
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said it was a “combination of old-school detective work and new age technology” that helped lead police to Mangione, who has ties to Maryland, California, Hawaii, and does not have an arrest record, police said.
The arrest comes as a private funeral is set to be held Monday for Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO who was gunned down as he arrived at the hotel last week for an investors’ conference.

The CEO of UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealth’s parent company, said the health insurance giant will continue to prevent “unnecessary care,” according to a report.

“Our role is a critical role, and we make sure that care is safe, appropriate, and is delivered when people need it,” he said in his leaked remarks which were obtained by journalist Ken Klippenstein, and published by the New York Post.
“We guard against the pressures that exist for unsafe care or for unnecessary care to be delivered in a way which makes the whole system too complex and ultimately unsustainable.”
Witty is said to have encouraged employees to “tune out” the criticism surrounding the company.

On Thursday, police revealed photographs of the assailant’s unmasked face inside the HI New York City Hostel – including one photograph of the man smiling while apparently flirting with a female employee behind the desk. While searching a wooded area at the southern end of Central Park on Friday evening, police discovered a gray backpack nestled between two boulders containing two items: a Tommy Hilfiger jacket and Monopoly money.
By Saturday and Sunday, police deployed specialised teams across NYC of divers and gun-detecting dogs to look for the murder weapon.
A Starbucks water bottle, which contains the assailant’s DNA and partial fingerprints, and a discarded mobile phone were discovered in an alleyway near the crime scene on Sixth Avenue.

Police say the man who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson may have used a veterinary gun.
Veterinary guns are larger firearms used by farmers to put down animals without making a loud noise. The weapons are near-silent, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

CNN’s Chief Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst John Miller described the guns as meant for “close-up killing.”
“It’s meant for vets to kill an animal by shooting it in the head or somewhere, you know, that’s going to be fatal,” he said. “But it would work the exact same way on humans, very effectively and extraordinarily quietly.”
