Bring Sabah’s rice SSL to 70pc by next years, says MP

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan is concerned by the move of Asia’s top food producers to limit their rice exports which might result in a gradual increase of rice prices in Sabah in the next two years.

As such, Warisan’s Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis said it was imperative for the State Government to prioritise Sabah’s rice self-sufficiency level (SSL) and bring it to 70 per cent by 2025 while reducing dependency on imports.

She said currently, Sabah’s rice SSL is around 20 to 23 per cent.

“On June 25, the Federal Agriculture and Food Security Minister replied my question in the Dewan Rakyat on the effect of Vietnam reducing its rice exports.
