Kota Kinabalu: The Rhythms of Kinabalu (ROK) 2026 programme showcases Sabah’s identity through performances rooted in local legends, heritage and folklore, says National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) Director-General Mohd Amran Mohd Haris.
He said the 12th edition features iconic Sabah stories, including the legend of Aki Nabalu (Mount Kinabalu), the Murut warrior tradition, the Hominodun narrative and the Ratu Lepa culture.
“There is no denying that Sabah is rich in ethnic diversity, so we present it in the form of performances for the local community and international tourists.
“For this 12th edition, iconic Sabah stories such as the legend of Aki Nabalu (Mount Kinabalu), Murut warriors, the Hominodun narrative and the Ratu Lepa culture are presented to bring something different this time.
“Content built on cultural identity is not only a symbol of unity through the arts, but also serves as a main platform to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (TMM2026) and Visit Sabah Year 2027,” he said.
He spoke to reporters at the ROK 2026 programme at Padang Merdeka here on Saturday.
Amran said Sabah is the 10th state on this year’s programme before it moves on to other states.
“We will hold more Cultural Tourism performances, including in Pahang, Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak, to close JKKN’s Cultural Tourism programme for 2026,” he said.
On TMM2026 and Visit Sabah Year 2027, he said the Federal and State Governments will work as closely as possible to boost the tourism industry next year.
“TMM2026 will also continue next year and Sabah will host Visit Sabah Year 2027.
“ROK is the content we will bring through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and JKKN to promote these programmes,” he said.
ROK 2026 was officiated by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, representing the Chief Minister.
