Brit needing ‘urgent’ care after hantavirus outbreak to be evacuated from cruise ship

  • A British crew member and a Dutch colleague are being medically evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship due to acute respiratory symptoms amid a suspected hantavirus outbreak.
  • Global health authorities suspect person-to-person transmission of the hantavirus on board, but assess the risk to global health as low.
  • The MV Hondius began its voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde on 1 April, during which at least three people have died.
  • Seven hantavirus cases have been identified on the ship, including two confirmed, with a British passenger receiving care in South Africa and a Dutch woman dying after disembarking.
  • The UK government is putting plans in place for the onward travel of British citizens currently aboard the cruise ship.
