British national diagnosed with suspected hantavirus on tiny volcanic island

  • A British national on the remote volcanic island of Tristan da Cunha has been diagnosed with suspected hantavirus linked to a cruise ship outbreak.
  • Two British nationals have confirmed cases of the virus but there is now “an additional suspected case of a British national on Tristan da Cunha”, the UK Health Security Agency said.
  • The patient remains on the remote South Atlantic island, which is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha; it has a population of just 221 and is just 11km in diameter.
  • The other two British nationals remain in hospital in the Netherlands and South Africa.
  • None of the British citizens onboard the cruise ship, the MV Hondius, are currently reporting symptoms but they are being closely monitored.
