Munitions disposal experts on Sunday successfully defused a large World War II bomb found during construction work in the south-western German city of Pforzheim, the local fire services chief said.

Up to 30,000 people had been evacuated from their homes before work began on the British HC-4000 bomb, commonly known as a "blockbuster," containing around 1.35 tons of explosive. It was found in the eastern part of the city on Wednesday.

The bomb did not pose an "immediate danger to the public," city officials had said in a statement on Friday.

The evacuation order affected parts of the city centre and disrupted public transport services.

Even more than 80 years after the end of World War II, it remains common for unexploded bombs from the conflict to be discovered in Germany.
