Pop star Britney Spears was released from custody following her arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Ventura County.

VENTURA COUNTY: Pop icon Britney Spears was released from police custody on Thursday morning. She had been arrested the previous night on suspicion of driving while intoxicated near Los Angeles.

The 44-year-old singer was booked by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff records confirm her release at 6:07 AM local time.

A court appearance has been scheduled for May 4. Spears’s representative addressed the incident in a statement to Deadline.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” the statement read. The representative added that Spears would “take the right steps and comply with the law.”

The statement expressed hope that this could be “the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.” Spears has largely stepped back from music in recent years.

Her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me,” detailed aspects of her personal struggles. In it, she insisted she never used hard drugs and did not have a drinking problem.

She did admit to taking Adderall, a medication for ADHD. Spears was under a controversial conservatorship controlled by her father for 13 years.

That legal arrangement was dissolved by a Los Angeles court in 2021. It ended following the massive public support of the “Free Britney” movement.
