Britons urged to ‘drink responsibly’ amid record-breaking heatwave

  • A chief from the UK’s largest ambulance service has urged Britons to drink responsibly and avoid outdoor exercise amid the ongoing heatwave.
  • It comes after the Met Office confirmed that temperatures rose to 36.7C in Merryfield, Somerset, on Thursday, provisionally breaking records as the UK’s hottest June day.
  • On Wednesday, the London Ambulance service responded to its highest ever number of life-threatening emergencies.
  • Ahead of England’s World Cup game on Saturday, the service’s chief operating officer Craig Harman has advised people to drink “plenty of water” in between alcoholic beverages.
  • He added: “I’m saying to people I need you to drink water even when you’re not thirsty, staying out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, and particularly not exercising outside and putting your body under additional heat and strain.”
