MANILA, Philippines — K-pop supergroup BTS announced Wednesday that they will not submit its music for consideration at the 69th Annual Grammy Awards.
The seven-member group — RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook — shared the announcement through their individual Instagram Stories, saying that they had collectively decided to skip the 2027 Grammy Awards submission process.
In a statement shared on social media on Wednesday, the group said: "We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year. We hope music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language. Thank you to ARMY and to everyone who is always with us."
The group did not provide further details about its decision.
The announcement came shortly after the Recording Academy unveiled five new competitive categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance.
The addition of the category sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans and industry observers welcomed it as a step toward broader recognition of Asian artists, others argued that it could unintentionally separate Asian acts from competing in the ceremony's major general-field categories. The debate intensified as BTS continues to enjoy commercial success with its latest album, "Arirang."
BTS has received five Grammy nominations throughout its career but has yet to win the prestigious music award.
In addition to Best Asian Pop Music Performance, the Recording Academy announced new categories for Best R&B Collaboration Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album and Best Latin Song.
The group has remained one of the world's biggest music acts following its highly anticipated reunion. Earlier this month, BTS made history by performing during FIFA's first-ever World Cup Final Halftime Show at MetLife Stadium ahead of the Spain-Argentina championship match.
BTS is also continuing promotions for "Normal," the latest official single from its fifth studio album, "Arirang," which has been climbing global music charts following an extensive music video and international radio campaign. WITH A REPORT FROM MARK CARLO SIBUG
