Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has tabled the Budget 2025 in the Parliament today (October 18).
Anwar noted that students in Fully Residential Schools (SBP) get a subsidy of RM15,000 a year, but it turns out that 30% of these students come from wealthy families.
He highlighted that even at the university level, undergraduate pharmacy students pay an average tuition fee of RM3,000 a year, even though the total cost of their education is RM30,000. This subsidy doesn’t take into account how much their families earn.
“If we start cutting subsidies for the top 15% of earners, we could use those savings to improve facilities in SBP and public universities (IPTA) for everyone,” he said.
He also mentioned that this approach could benefit public health. People with higher incomes should help to improve health services at government hospitals.
The savings could then be used to buy medical devices for low-income patients and upgrade equipment in hospitals and public clinics.
