Budget 2027 allocates RM19.1 billion to higher education, including RM800 million for campus upgrades, tax deductions for university donations and plans to replace AUKU.
PETALING JAYA: The Higher Education Ministry has been allocated RM19.1 billion under Budget 2027, including RM800 million to upgrade lecture halls, student accommodation and replace ageing equipment at higher education institutions.
Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said donations to public universities from individuals, alumni and corporations would qualify for income tax deductions of up to 10% of aggregate income.
He also announced that the ministry would develop a comprehensive higher education legal framework to replace the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU), covering university autonomy, academic freedom and student rights.
“Effective immediately, all disciplinary proceedings at public universities involving freedom of speech, expression of views, public criticism and peaceful assemblies have been halted,” he said when tabling the budget today.
