Budget 2027 allocates RM15 million from the palm oil industry cess for wildlife conservation, a fishing net buyback scheme and sewage upgrades on four islands.
PETALING JAYA: The government will channel RM15 million collected through the palm oil industry cess towards environmental conservation, with priority given to protecting endangered wildlife such as the Malayan tiger, Bornean elephant and orangutan.
Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the initiative was part of broader efforts to protect Malaysia’s natural heritage and marine ecosystems.
The government will also introduce a buyback scheme for old fishing nets to prevent discarded nets from endangering marine life.
The move comes as leatherback turtles have returned to nest along Terengganu’s coastline for the first time since they were last recorded in 2017.
In addition, outdated public sewage systems will be upgraded urgently on Pulau Tuba, Langkawi, Redang and Tioman to improve environmental protection in the affected areas.
