During the sidelines of her joint birthday celebrations together with her uncle, Farouq, aunty Nadja and younger sister, Ilfi, at JP (Journey Perfected) Co Cafe in IOI City Mall, Putrajaya, Iffah, a Form 2 student of a Boarding Secondary School, when the senior family members engaged in a conversations about the Budget 2027, posed to me a simple but very pertinent question: Who decides the Malaysian Economy? I responded by stating “The Federal Government of Malaysia led by the Prime Minister who is concurrently the Minister of Finance through a network of key public institutions, Govern-Linked Investment Companies (GLICs), and Government-Linked Companies (GLCs). The Finance Minister holds real powerful position as he overseas MoF Incorporate, which controls a vast empire of companies in strategic sectors, including banks, utility, oil and gas, infrastructure, property, telecommunication and development finance. What this means is that the government can exert a strong influence on GLICs and GLCs when it comes to major commercial decisions, including the award of contracts, key appointments, corporate strategy, financing, asset acquisitions and sales.”

In this context, Budget 2027 to be tabled by Prime Minister & Minister of Finance Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, holds immense strategic significance for Malaysia's economy as it is the final major spending plan ahead of the 16th General Election, which must be held by early 2028. The budget themed “Malaysia Madani: Reaching for the Skies, Rooted in the Earth” serves a dual purpose: providing immediate cost-of-living relief to households while advancing long-term structural shifts under the 13th Malaysia Plan, and defending the country's ongoing fiscal consolidation goals.

As a management educator, I understand that the future of Malaysian economy is built on a massive structural shift toward high-tech manufacturing, global AI infrastructure & fiscal consolidation, putting the nation on track to achieve high-income status by 2028 to 2030. The World Bank & the Asian Development Bank have recently upgraded Malaysia's growth outlook, of 4.9% to 5.1%.
