As the World Union of Small Union and Medium Enterprises (WUSME) Ambassador in Malaysia, I understand that RM83 billion development expenditure allocation under Budget 2027 offers an opportunity to strengthen the country's economic foundations, expand business opportunities and support sustainable growth. The budget reflects the government's sustained commitment to supporting economic growth backed by sustained development expenditure, providing a foundation for strengthening Malaysia's economic resilience and long-term business growth potential. The government's proposed RM83 billion development expenditure allocation for 2027 was marginally higher than the RM81 billion allocated in the current year, representing a 2.5 per cent year-on-year increase. This is in line with the government's MADANI Budget continues to prioritize projects of public interest and infrastructure that support household, workers and local small businesses.

SMEs are the true backbone of the Malaysian economy, accounting for 96% of all business establishments and employing over 7.3 million people. According to data from the SME Corp. Malaysia Official Portal, SMEs contribute 39.1% to Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and make-up 12.2% of total exp[orts, driving local supply chains and economic resilience across both urban & rural regions. I learned the key pillars supporting SME growth are agencies like the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) offer the SME Digital Grant to help traditional businesses adopt automation, e-commerce, and digital POS systems. Whereas, development financial institution like Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) and SME Bank provide micro-loans & working capital financing.

I believe the future of local enterprises in Malaysia is geared toward digital integration, global high-value export participation, and ESG sustainability. Under the national framework, the MADANI government has officially designated 2027 as the Year of Malaysian SMEs. Propelled by the government's target to grow the digital economy by 30% of the nation's total GDP by 2030, the survival & growth of local businesses hinges on moving on the technological value chain rather than relying solely on low-cost labor. Local enterprises are transitioning from basic commerce to advanced Artificial intelligence (AI) adoption & business automation. To future-proof operations against intense domestic competition, local businesses are pivoting towards international markets.
