Building trust in Malaysia’s AI future

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has outlined its ambition to establish a sovereign, trustworthy artificial intelligence framework to drive national resilience and secure its autonomous future, as top policymakers gathered in the capital recently.

Speaking at the 11th Annual Malaysia OpenGov CXO Leadership Forum 2026 on Oct 6, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, alongside senior ministry officials, addressed key technology executives and public sector leaders on the strategic shift required to navigate the era of autonomous intelligence.

During a keynote fireside chat on ‘Digital Sovereignty in the Age of AI: Securing Malaysia’s Autonomous Future’, Datuk Fabian Bigar, the ministry’s secretary-general, highlighted the importance of robust data security and sovereign digital infrastructure.

He framed trusted public sector innovation as the essential foundation for safeguarding the nation’s long-term digital autonomy.

Addressing the balance between rapid deployment and governance, the ministry’s deputy secretary-general (digital development), Ma. Sivanesan, joined a session titled ‘Trust or Turmoil? Leading the Nation Through the Age of Autonomous Intelligence’. He emphasised that maintaining public trust through clear governance structures remains critical to building economic and institutional resilience against emerging AI risks.

In a panel session exploring ‘From AI Pilots to Agentic Advantage’, Gobind mapped out the path for moving artificial intelligence from localised proof-of-concept experiments to enterprise-wide, value-generating deployments. He stressed that successful scaling hinges on modernising underlying data architectures, scaling technical capability, and enforcing meaningful human oversight across all automated systems.

To underline the government’s operational progress, five key initiatives under the Ministry of Digital were awarded ‘Recognition of Excellence Awards’ during the forum.

According to the Digital Ministry, the participation of its top leadership, paired with recognition for core platform initiatives, underlines Putrajaya’s strategic push to create an AI ecosystem that is secure, resilient, and equipped for enterprise-scale integration.
