Teluk Intan, a town along the Perak River, is my place of birth and renowned for its Leaning Tower, just like “Pisa” can refer to the city in Italy famous for its Leaning Tower and historic monuments. I still remember visited the iconic city in Tuscany, central Italy, known for its historic architecture and university.
The Chinese pagoda style eight stories learning tower, stands 25.5 meter tall is synonymous with Teluk Intan. It was initially built as a water tower by a contractor, the late Leong Choon Chong, designed to store potable water for the town during dry season. The tower started learning a few years after its completion sue to the soft soil and the weight of the water tank at the top. Despite the tilt, the tower remains stable and continues to stand as a landmark. It served as a water reservoir and later as a watchtower during Japanese Occupation. Currently, it is no longer stores water but remains a popular tourist attraction, and being listed as one of the places of interest in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026. Coincidently, whilst on family vacation in Jakarta, Indonesia's dynamic capital, that blends history, culture & modern business energy, I received whatsapp message and images from my mentor, Dato' Syed Ahmad Idid, former High Court Judge that he & his best half, Datin Noraini had an interesting stopover in Teluk Intan. They admired the tower architectural design, and obviously tasted some local delights, the fresh lobsters at D'Tepian Sungai Restaurant. It was one of their on-going romantic sightseeing around Malaysia, and overseas visiting historical places, and to enjoy for unforgettable dining experiences.
I am indeed grateful with Dato' Syed & Datin Noraini for visiting my birth place of which I believed they are going to share their lovely experiences with all local friends and overseas networks. Dato' Syed is one of the top eminent Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Alumni Achievement Award recipients.
