- A 3.5-metre bronze whaler shark, nicknamed Bukang-i, has been trapped in a canal in the South Korean port city of Busan for more than a week.
- The Korea Coast Guard dispatched boats and a rescue team to try and guide the shark towards open water, however the operation was suspended following warnings from scientists that forcing the animal out could trigger defensive behaviour.
- Scientists have said the shark remains in a stable condition, but warn its health could decline if its restricted feeding and movement persist.
- The trapped shark has attracted more than 600,000 visitors to the area, while Busan has even named the shark an honorary publicity ambassador.
- Mayor of Busan Jeon Jae-soo said: “Bukang-i has established itself as a new story of Busan amidst the interest and affection of the citizens.”
