El Salvador has seized a record amount of cocaine in its latest anti-drug operations, President Nayib Bukele said on Saturday.

A total of 6.68 tons of cocaine, valued at an estimated $167 million, were confiscated during two naval operations in the Pacific Ocean, Bukele wrote on social media.

Six suspected smugglers from Colombia and Ecuador were arrested in connection with the seizures.

Bukele described the operation as the "biggest blow against drug trafficking" in El Salvador's history.

According to government figures, the latest haul brings the total amount of cocaine seized in the Central American country since the beginning of the year to around 13 tons.

While El Salvador is not among the world's major cocaine-producing countries, it is used by traffickers as a transit route for shipments moving from South America across the Pacific towards North America.

Bukele has made the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking a central pillar of his security policy.
