Bukit Jalil Stadium to close from tomorrow for repairs: Peja

KUALA LUMPUR – Bukit Jalil National Stadium will be closed effective tomorrow to allow for repair work to be carried out.

In a statement today, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the initial plan was to close the stadium at the end of March next year to begin repair work, but the current situation requires immediate action, which cannot be delayed.

“The issues of field quality and its facilities are serious matters. We cannot continue to gamble away the dignity of the country.

“This is also a legacy issue that needs to be addressed swiftly and thoroughly,” read the statement.

He was commenting on the appalling condition of the Bukit Jalil National Stadium pitch during Malaysia’s 2023 Asian Cup Qualifiers match against Bahrain on Saturday night.

The pitch had been soaked since 7pm from a heavy downpour that lasted two hours.

Despite that, a source said the organisers had ignored Malaysia Stadium Corp’s advice to postpone the kick-off time by 30 minutes to allow the water to drain, but the organisers ignored them and decided to start the match at 9pm. – The Vibes, June 14, 2022
