Bundu Tuhan women gain business support

Kota Kinabalu: Many women in Bundu Tuhan, Ranau used to be either housewives or small vendors just trying to get by. They had no proper place to sell their products, little knowledge of marketing, and no idea how to manage quality control. Their efforts were often unseen, and their potential remained untapped.

Through the Usahanita Programme, organised by DumoWongi,  they have gained skills, confidence, and exposure. They can now create products, build their own brands, and join events to introduce their products and reach new customers.

The change showed how - with the help of government agencies - local women entrepreneurs are becoming important drivers of community growth, and the rural economy of Ranau.

The programme is a three-year initiative funded by Yayasan Axiata, coordinated by the Sabah Social Entrepreneurs Association (SOSEA), and implemented by DumoWongi.

Launched in September 2025, it brings together 20 women’s communities, providing them with training in areas such as product innovation, brand development, financial literacy, and business promotion.

According to Datuk Arthur Sen Siong Soo, Political Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Utilities (KKRU), the programme emphasised resilience and commitment as keys to entrepreneurial success.

He praised Irene Mositol, founder of DumoWongi, as an exemplary leader who highlighted the importance of confidence and independence in building sustainable businesses.

He officiated the ‘Usahanita Open Day 2026 – Towards Sustainable Market Programme’ held at Bundu Tuhan. The event showcased the growing strength of women entrepreneurs and provide the communities a platform to promote and sell products developed through training in branding, finance, and marketing.

The success of a business depends on the effort and commitment of the entrepreneur:“Whether a business succeeds or not depends on the entrepreneur themselves. Opportunities and support are important, but entrepreneurs must continue to strive and be brave to move forward,” he said.

The initiative is set to provide continuous exposure and income opportunities, strengthening rural economy through women-led entrepreneurship.

The event also saw launching of five new products, including Aki Nabalu 7 Herbs, Compost Products, Kuih Sapit Kale, and two community-authored books, aside from featuring eco workshops, children’s activities, and lucky draws, making it a true celebration of community spirit.

Irene also hopes the programme continues to receive support from the local community, associations, government agencies, and strategic partners ensuring the sustainability of women entrepreneur development activities.
