Burnham fast-tracks measures to making cancelling subscriptions easier

  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham is accelerating plans to make it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions and ensure companies provide clearer upfront cost information.
  • The measures, initially planned for next spring, will now be introduced in January as part of a broader effort to tackle the cost of living crisis.
  • Mr Burnham will also launch a consultation to add deceptive discount offers to the Competition and Markets Authority's list of banned practices, aiming to prevent firms from artificially inflating prices.
  • The proposals have been welcomed by Citizens Advice, which said that they could potentially save households £14 per month by getting rid of subscription traps.
  • The announcements come amid criticism from opposition figures, who label the PM's summer tour a "vanity tour" and question the funding for his cost of living initiatives, including previous tax cuts and spending plans.
