Burnham invites Trump to Manchester in one of his first calls as new PM

  • Andy Burnham, the new Prime Minister, spoke with Donald Trump shortly after entering Downing Street.
  • During their call, Mr Burnham invited Mr Trump to Manchester, reportedly to coincide with the 2027 G20 Summit, according to the Sunday Times.
  • Discussions are also understood to have included new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, a topic Mr Trump has publicly commented on, suggesting Mr Burnham will open oil fields “all the way”.
  • The new prime minister previously insisted he would stick to Labour’s manifesto pledge not to issue new North Sea licences, though he has also refused to deny reports that he is considering approving new production.
  • Other world leaders, including those from the EU, Ukraine, Australia, France, Italy, and Germany, congratulated Mr Burnham on his appointment.
