In the peculiar incident that unfolded in Taman Pandan Mewah, a 61-year-old man set his own mattress and pillow ablaze in a fit of anger, an act triggered by his dissatisfaction with his wife attending a wedding in Kajang without him. The man's wife, who earns a living as a cleaner, returned home around 9 pm to an unsettling odor of smoke permeating their residence. A thorough inspection revealed that her husband had intentionally ignited the fire, targeting their mattress and pillow as a manifestation of his frustration.

While the suspect confessed to using a lighter to start the fire, he managed to extinguish it himself before his wife's return. The 57-year-old wife promptly reported the incident to the Ampang Jaya police, leading to the husband's arrest at 10:10 pm on the same night. The authorities seized a lighter believed to be the ignition source during the arrest. Although the suspect, with no prior criminal record and a negative drug test result, now faces legal consequences, a four-day remand order has been obtained for further investigation, extending until January 22.

The case falls under Section 435 of the Penal Code, addressing mischief by fire with the intent to cause damage. The severity of this offense is reflected in potential penalties, including imprisonment for up to fourteen years, coupled with possible fines. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked emotions and the importance of maintaining composure in interpersonal relationships.

Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail, the Ampang Jaya police chief, has issued a warning to the public, urging individuals to refrain from engaging in acts of mischief or criminal activities. This caution emphasizes the significance of upholding public order and safety, discouraging impulsive actions that can lead to legal repercussions. The incident in Taman Pandan Mewah serves as a peculiar yet illustrative case of the consequences that can arise from uncontrolled emotions, underscoring the need for constructive communication and coping mechanisms in dealing with personal grievances.
