The police have found the charred remains of a 14-year-old girl from the Khuralgarh forest area in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district and detained a 23-year-old suspect in connection with the alleged murder.
A team from the Nawanshahr (City) police station, led by SHO Avtar Singh, reached the forest area along with the suspect, a resident of a village near Jadla, after he allegedly disclosed the location of the body during interrogation.
According to the police, the girl’s mother, Usha, had lodged a complaint alleging that her daughter had been lured away by a youth. During the investigation, the police detained a suspect for questioning.
SHO Avtar Singh said the suspect allegedly confessed to killing the girl and transporting her body in a suitcase to the Khuralgarh forest area, where he is accused of setting it on fire on May 29.
Acting on the disclosure, the police recovered the severely burnt remains from the forest. Officials said the body had been burnt to such an extent that only skeletal remains were left.
The SHO said investigations were continuing and the circumstances leading to the alleged murder were being examined. Further legal action is being taken in the case.
