BURSA Malaysia Berhad will introduce sweeping enhancements to its investor segmentation data from 6 April 2026, separating nominee accounts by institutional and retail ownership and reclassifying foreign-owned Malaysian-incorporated companies according to the source of investment funds rather than legal ownership.
In a statement, Bursa Malaysia said the improvements are intended to provide a clearer and more accurate picture of participation across different investor segments, while better reflecting the true nature of domestic investment activity.
The exchange explained that the changes will involve the segregation of nominee accounts held on behalf of institutional and retail investors, thereby offering a more precise view of the level of trading participation attributable to each group.
“In addition, investment flows of foreign-owned companies incorporated in Malaysia will be reclassified based on the source of investment funds rather than ownership, in order to more accurately reflect domestic investment activity.
“The updated investor category will be reflected in Bursa Malaysia’s data packages beginning 6 April 2026,” he said.
The reclassification means that investment flows from foreign-owned companies incorporated in Malaysia will in future be categorised according to where the funds originate, rather than by shareholding structure alone.
The exchange said this approach would allow market data to more faithfully represent domestic trading dynamics.
The updated investor categories will be reflected in Bursa Malaysia’s data packages from the April implementation date.
The initiative underscores the exchange’s continuing commitment to ensuring that market information remains relevant and transparent, and that it accurately captures prevailing trading behaviour and evolving market dynamics.
Analysts said the refinements are likely to aid investors, researchers and policymakers in forming more informed assessments of participation trends and capital flows within Malaysia’s capital market. - February 24, 2026
