A DTC bus mounted a road divider near the Rajghat traffic signal in central Delhi after allegedly suffering a brake failure, police said on Monday.
According to police, the bus was travelling from Sarai Kale Khan to Rajghat when its braking system reportedly malfunctioned.
Several videos of the incident surfaced on social media, showing the bus stranded diagonally on the divider near the busy intersection.
During a preliminary inquiry, police found that the bus was empty at the time of the incident, with only the driver and conductor on board.
“When the bus reached near the Rajghat traffic signal, the brakes failed to function properly. Sensing the danger and to avoid any untoward incident, the driver steered the vehicle onto the divider in an attempt to stop it safely,” a senior police officer said.
The bus eventually came to a halt on the divider, triggering panic among commuters and motorists in the area. However, no other vehicle was hit and no injuries or casualties were reported, police said.
Both the driver and conductor escaped unhurt.
The incident caused temporary traffic disruption as police and traffic personnel worked to clear the road and remove the bus.
Viral videos showed passers-by gathering near the spot and recording the incident on their mobile phones.
A PCR call regarding the accident was received at the IP Estate police station, following which police teams rushed to the scene.
Police said further inquiry was underway to determine the exact cause of the technical malfunction.
Meanwhile, a DTC official said, “A report has been sought from the concerned depot manager in the matter.”
