For everything that matters in tech

Brought to you by BYD

City driving can be a chore. The act of driving from point A to point B, even for short distances, is a menial task. Instead of contributing to the pollution of running an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) car, why not pick up an Electric Vehicle (EV) instead?

Driving an EV is very different from an ICE car. For one, you are not burning fossil fuel to drive from one point to another. It is pretty convenient to not need to fill up fuel when you are running low.  Additionally, EVs are great and perfect for city driving you do not make any emissions when you drive around the city. It's an excellent addition to a modern hybrid living mode.

Cheaper maintenance

EVs can be cheaper than ICE cars to maintain in the long run. You don't have any costly consumables to think about, no more thinking of engine oil, transmission oil and so on. Your main consumables to replace will be the tyres, and the brake oil and that's it. Your service intervals are also not as frequent as ICE cars, so you will have a lower cost of ownership in the long run.

Plus, with the current government tax breaks, even buying an EV can be cheaper as a whole than an equivalent ICE car. The Malaysian government is even helping you there is no road tax for your EV until 2026.

If you are worried about safety, don't be. The Blade Battery is a proven technology from BYD, and it is among the safest batteries in the world.

More fun to drive

Driving an EV is very different from an ICE car you get 100% of your car's power from the start so this means you will be quick to manoeuvre around traffic with no power lag when you press on the accelerator.

You will also experience smoother acceleration thanks to that, and you get all the power you need to manoeuvre and drive around obstacles at your pleasure, not the car's. This elevates the living experience with an EV.

Also, as you have only the motor to think about, there is no need to consider which gear to use during which situation move the drive selector to D and the way you go. You don't get that peace of mind with ICE cars as there are so many moving parts you need to think about, and auxiliary parts connected to the engine also need to be considered.

Discerning buyers should also consider the BYD ATTO 3 as it has the best interior space for its class when compared to its competitors in the market at this price range. It is also better equipped with features such as that unique rotatable centre screen, a long-range (420KM on the extended range), and even a 6-year/150,000km warranty (8-year/160,000km for the battery) which is unmatched by the other brands in Malaysia.

EV as an ICE car partner

Of course, there is still use for an ICE car. For one, it is useful for long-distance driving. ICE car is more efficient for longer drives where distances between fast EV chargers are vast and need proper planning for travelling. Other situations where ICE cars are still important include off-road driving, gravel roads and trans-national driving.

On the other hand, EVs are great for intra-city driving, where travel times and distances are counted in minutes rather than hours.

For example, driving from Ampang to Petaling Jaya is more economical with an EV than an ICE car. ICE cars will be burning fuel even when idling or in traffic jams (which you will be stuck in) while EVs will only spend energy when moving no lost power when waiting at the traffic lights. You even can gain back some energy with regenerative braking, where the braking the car generates power to recharge the battery.

For a quick 60km drive between KL and Nilai which took us about one hour, we clocked in consumption of 12.3kW/h with the BYD ATTO 3. The same drive in a similar-sized ICE car will have a consumption of roughly 11.7 L/100km. When calculated with the current RON95 prices, that trip will cost you RM 14, while the same trip with an EV car will cost you only RM 7.50 (based on a charging fee of RM 1.50/kWh DC fast charger) or about RM 2.73 (based on home charging rates with the current electric tariff of RM0.55/kWh).

The BYD ATTO 3 is a combination of great features and driving experience. Thanks to the BYD Blade Batteries, you get an exceptional driving range so that you can drive around Kuala Lumpur without ever needing to top and recharge daily – only when you need it. The batteries on a BYD ATTO 3 can be charged at home with the included AC adapter, or plugged into any of the DC chargers available around Malaysia. With the 150kW and 310Nm peak torque of maximum power available on hand, drivers can go up to 480 KM based on the NEDC range calculations on a single charge. That is equivalent to going back and forth between Genting Highlands and Putrajaya roughly five times. The BYD ATTO 3 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 7.3 seconds.
