BYD Co has taken a significant leap forward in the electric vehicle (EV) transition race with the unveiling of a groundbreaking hybrid powertrain capable of traveling over 2,000km without the need for recharging or refueling. This move intensifies the competition against industry giants like Toyota Motor Corp and Volkswagen AG.
The upgraded technology, aimed at solidifying BYD's lead over its traditional rivals, will debut in two affordable sedans priced under 100,000 yuan (US$13,800). This announcement came during a livestreamed event from China, marking a significant milestone for the company.
With this extended range, some of BYD's dual-mode plug-in electric hybrid cars can cover astonishing distances on a single charge and tank of gas, equivalent to journeys from Singapore to Bangkok, New York to Miami, or Munich to Madrid. This achievement underscores BYD's continuous efforts in reducing fuel consumption since its entry into the hybrid market in 2008.
BYD's aggressive pricing strategies have disrupted the Chinese auto market, albeit at the expense of profitability. The introduction of ultra-long hybrids may escalate the ongoing price war. Despite this, BYD remains a dominant force, selling 3 million cars last year and nearly 1 million vehicles through April this year, making it a key revenue and profit driver.
The announcement led to a surge in BYD's Hong Kong-listed shares, reflecting investor optimism in the company's future prospects.
Globally, automakers are grappling with consumers' range anxiety and environmental concerns. Toyota, in response, unveiled prototypes of a new generation of internal combustion engines capable of running on various fuels alongside batteries, underscoring the industry's shift towards cleaner technologies.
During the unveiling event, BYD claimed impressive test results, with its plug-in hybrid achieving up to 2,500 kilometers in range. While initially targeted for the domestic market, these upgrades are expected to be exported soon, further expanding BYD's global footprint.
Both electric and hybrid vehicles are pushing the boundaries of range to address consumers' apprehensions about transitioning from traditional gasoline-powered cars. BYD's decision to cease production of fossil fuel-powered vehicles in early 2022 demonstrates its commitment to sustainability while expanding hybrid exports to emerging markets with limited charging infrastructure.
The first two vehicles showcasing the long-range capabilities are mid-sized sedans— the Qin L and the Seal 06—unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show. They belong to the Dynasty and Ocean series, respectively, highlighting BYD's dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship in the automotive industry.
