KOTA KINABALU: Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has introduced a groundbreaking fast-charging system that can add approximately 470 kilometers (292 miles) of range in just five minutes. The system is part of BYD’s new 1,000-volt EV platform, which significantly outperforms Tesla’s Superchargers, capable of providing up to 275 kilometers in 15 minutes.
The new charging technology was demonstrated using BYD’s Han L sedan, one of the first models set to feature the ultra-fast charging capability. The company’s Tang L SUV will also adopt the system, with sales expected to begin next month.
To support the adoption of this advanced charging infrastructure, BYD is planning to build more than 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China. This move aligns with China’s broader push for EV dominance, further solidifying BYD’s position as a leader in the industry.
The development comes amid increasing competition among automakers to improve EV charging speeds, a key factor in encouraging wider adoption of electric vehicles. While companies like Tesla and Porsche have made significant strides in fast-charging technology, BYD’s latest innovation could shift the industry’s focus toward even faster and more efficient charging solutions.
With its latest advancement, BYD not only challenges its global competitors but also reinforces China’s leadership in EV technology, signaling a new era of rapid-charging capabilities for the electric vehicle market.
