Chinese new energy vehicle titan BYD has reached an unprecedented industrial milestone, with its global headcount officially surpassing 1.02 million employees, according to company chairman Wang Chuanfu.

BYD now employs over one million people which puts them in unprecedented territory within the global manufacturing sector. BYD’s payroll now exceeds the combined workforces of Toyota, General Motors, Ford, and Tesla, whose collective headcount stands at roughly 851,000.

The rapid headcount expansion marks a massive leap from the roughly 869,600 personnel BYD reported at the close of 2025. Of its current tally, approximately 960,000 workers are stationed domestically across China, while around 60,000 are deployed overseas across international assembly hubs, sales networks, and supply outposts.

Most notably, BYD commands an R&D ‘army’ of roughly 120,000 engineers and software developers tasked with advancing proprietary traction batteries, electric drive units, power electronics, and silicon carbide semiconductors.

The Engine Behind the Numbers: The “Super Closed Loop” of Vertical Integration

Headcount comparisons with legacy automakers require crucial operational context. Western and Japanese automakers primarily function as vehicle designers, final assemblers, and brand marketers, outsourcing sub-assemblies to Tier-1 mega-suppliers like Bosch, Denso, ZF, and Continental.

BYD operates on the exact opposite philosophy: ruthless, full-chain vertical integration:

  • Component Self-Sufficiency: Rather than buying outside components, BYD manufactures nearly everything in-house through its FinDreams (Fudi) subsidiaries—producing battery cells, thermal management systems, wiring harnesses, suspension stampings, electric drive axles, and IGBT/SiC power microchips.
  • Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS): A massive slice of BYD’s payroll belongs to its publicly listed contract manufacturing wing, BYD Electronics. With over 160,000 workers, this unit not only assembles millions of smartphones, laptops, and smart consumer devices for external tech giants, but also builds BYD Auto’s proprietary digital cockpits, domain controllers, and sensor housings.
  • Industrial Megaprojects: BYD’s sprawling corporate umbrella encompasses large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), electric transit buses, commercial trucks, and elevated mass-transit rail infrastructure (SkyRail and SkyShuttle), supported by a dedicated maritime fleet of vehicle transport vessels.

While a million-person payroll would paralyze conventional automakers with bloated fixed overheads, BYD’s localized Chinese labor footprint and internal supplier margins have functioned as an industrial shield. During global supply chain logjams and semiconductor droughts, the company kept assembly lines running at full throttle while rivals paused production.

The staffing surge comes against a complex operational backdrop. Across the first nine months of 2026 (January to September), BYD delivered 3,131,576 new energy vehicles globally—representing a modest 3.9 percent year-on-year softening as intense domestic discounting and saturated urban centers in China slowed pure volume growth.

However, the international picture tells a dramatically different story:

  • Export Surge: Overseas deliveries hit 1,342,960 vehicles during the nine-month period, rocketing 92.7 percent year on year.
  • Global Sales Mix: International markets now account for 42.9 percent of BYD’s total deliveries, up from less than 15 percent two years ago.
  • Geographic Imbalance: Despite nearly half of its sales originating abroad, roughly 94 percent of BYD’s workforce remains physically based inside mainland China, highlighting that its global manufacturing and assembly footprint in markets like Thailand, Brazil, and Hungary is still in the early ramp-up phases.
