The Gurugram police arrested a Rapido cab driver for allegedly committing an obscene act in front of a female software engineer inside a moving cab. The woman recorded a video of the incident and sent it to the police, following which the accused was arrested within hours.
The police identified the accused as Vijay Kumar (23), a resident of Banihari village in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh. The police seized the cab and are questioning him. He will be produced in a city court on Thursday.
According to the police, the woman lives in Malibu Town and works as a software engineer at a logistics company in Cyber Hub. At around 8.15 am, she booked a Rapido cab to travel to her office. Soon after she boarded the cab, the driver allegedly unzipped his trousers, exposed himself and began performing obscene acts in front of her.
Shocked by the driver’s behaviour, the woman discreetly recorded a video on her mobile phone. When she objected and asked him to stop the vehicle, the driver stopped the cab. However, he fled the spot after she got out.
The woman immediately informed the police control room. A local police team reached the spot and recorded her statement. She also handed over the video evidence and demanded strict action against the accused.
The police registered an FIR and assigned the investigation to Inspector Suman Sura, SHO of the Women Police Station, Sector 51. Using technical surveillance and cab booking data, the police traced the accused to the Bhondsi area and arrested him within two hours of the incident.
“During questioning, the accused said he ferried passengers through the Rapido platform. On Thursday morning, he picked up the complainant and allegedly committed the indecent act after driving a short distance. Further questioning is underway,” said a Gurugram police spokesperson.
