The Cabinet approves a comprehensive plan presented by KDN and MOT to immediately strengthen security controls and coordination at Malaysia’s entry points.

PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has approved a comprehensive plan to strengthen controls at the country’s entry points, with immediate action from today, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said.

He said the plan covered several measures presented by the Home Ministry (KDN) and Transport Ministry (MOT).

“Yes, several matters were presented by both KDN and MOT. As some involve security, I suggest you refer to KDN for the details.

“But the plan has been presented and approved by the Cabinet for immediate action starting today,” he told a post-Cabinet meeting press conference.

Yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the plan sought to strengthen coordination among agencies and end “siloed” approaches to managing the country’s entry points.

Airport security came under scrutiny following several cases involving Malaysians, including the recent arrest of a Malaysian pilot with about 25kg of MDMA at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia.

The Cabinet subsequently directed KDN and MOT to submit a comprehensive plan within two weeks to improve security controls at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

The directive followed government concerns that such incidents could damage Malaysia’s reputation and create perceptions of weaknesses in security controls at the airport.
