In a recent revelation, Fahmi Fadzil, government spokesperson, hinted at a forthcoming Cabinet discussion concerning the Prime Minister’s remarks regarding the house arrest order for Datuk Seri Najib Razak following his overseas trips. This agenda item was notably absent from the latest Cabinet meeting agenda but may resurface upon the Prime Minister's return next week.
The discourse ignited after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim proposed that the decision regarding Najib's house arrest should rest with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, post the conclusion of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial.
During the 2024 Doha Economic Forum, the Prime Minister articulated his stance, indicating a willingness to recommend house arrest for Najib only if explicitly requested by His Majesty. Emphasizing the importance of due legal process, he advocated for letting the legal proceedings take their course.
Anwar Ibrahim echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for collective focus on the ongoing 1MDB trial rather than diverting attention to discussions surrounding Najib's potential house arrest. He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the authority of the King, positioning himself as a staunch supporter of the monarchy.
Meanwhile, the legal saga took a complex turn as Najib filed an application in the Kuala Lumpur High Court challenging the validity of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong's Addendum Decree. Adding intrigue to the narrative, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emerged as a pivotal figure, submitting an affidavit in support of Najib's bid for judicial review.
Of particular note was Ahmad Zahid's claim regarding alleged interactions with Tengku Zafrul, where the latter purportedly shared details of the addendum order. This revelation added layers of complexity to the legal proceedings, hinting at potential behind-the-scenes machinations.
However, the High Court swiftly dismissed an application by Tengku Zafrul seeking to correct "factual inaccuracies" in Najib's application for judicial review, further complicating the legal landscape.
