The Federal Cabinet’s recent decision to overturn the Malaysian Islamic Development Department’s (Jakim) guidelines on Muslim participation in non-Muslim places of worship has been met with approval from the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong). Its president, Tan Sri T.C. Goh, emphasized that such sensitive proposals should never be presented in Parliament as government responses without thorough discussion and official approval.
Cabinet Approval First Before Announcing Sentitive Policies To Prevent Unnecessary Controversy
Goh stressed that racial and religious matters demand careful handling, cautioning against unilateral announcements by departments or agencies that could provoke unnecessary public unrest. “Policies affecting interfaith relations should not be introduced without Cabinet approval, as they risk stirring controversy and undermining national harmony,” he stated.
He reaffirmed Huazong’s support for the Cabinet’s move, hoping it would deter future instances of policy rollouts that bypass due process. Goh urged ministers to ensure that all parliamentary responses align with established and approved policies, particularly on sensitive issues.
Guidelines That Hinder Harmony
One of the key concerns raised by Goh was the impact of the now-withdrawn Guidelines on Muslim Participation in Non-Muslim Celebrations and Funerals. The directive had sparked anxiety among non-Muslims, as it required event organizers to seek approval and consult Islamic authorities before inviting Muslim leaders. Many viewed this as an unnecessary bureaucratic hurdle that could undermine Malaysia’s long-standing tradition of mutual respect and multicultural unity.
Genuine Inclusivity Without Unnecessary Restrictions
Goh pointed to Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s participation in Thaipusam as an example of inclusivity, highlighting how past and present national leaders have engaged in cultural celebrations without issue. “Malaysia’s identity is built on understanding and tolerance, and such inclusivity has always been natural, not restricted by rigid guidelines,” he said.
The Cabinet’s decision to reverse Jakim’s guidelines reaffirms Malaysia’s commitment to fostering religious harmony. Moving forward, Goh hopes that all government policies will be developed with thorough consideration and proper channels to prevent unnecessary tension and safeguard Malaysia’s multicultural heritage.
