PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that the Cabinet will reach a decision on matters relating to student discipline and school safety at its meeting tomorrow, amid growing concern over recent incidents involving violence, sexual assault and bullying in educational institutions.
Speaking briefly to reporters after officiating the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM-43) and the 25th ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-25) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today, Anwar said he had already discussed the matter with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
“We will discuss (the matter) in the Cabinet in detail. Earlier, I held a short discussion with the minister, tomorrow we will make a decision,” he said when asked about proposed education reforms.
The Prime Minister had previously stated that the government would take firm and immediate action to address safety and disciplinary concerns in schools.
The issue has taken on new urgency following a series of high-profile incidents, including the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old student in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, and statutory rape cases involving schoolchildren in Melaka and Kedah.
In addition to violent crimes, public attention has been drawn to a steady rise in school bullying. According to the Ministry of Education, 7,681 bullying cases were reported in 2024, up from 6,528 the previous year.
The upcoming Cabinet discussion is expected to focus on preventive measures, improved monitoring in schools, and the role of digital platforms in influencing student behaviour. - October 16, 2025
