THE Cabinet will hold a special meeting today to evaluate the potential impact of escalating tensions in West Asia, including the conflict involving the United States and Iran.

Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the meeting would examine the possible short-, medium- and long-term implications for the country, while discussing the government’s preparedness to respond to any developments affecting the national economy and public welfare.

“A special Cabinet meeting will be held today to present and discuss this matter in greater detail, including examining the possible impacts that may arise.

“This is important so that we can be prepared for any possibilities that may emerge,” said Fadillah, who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.

He was speaking to reporters during a breaking-of-fast event organised by national sewerage company Indah Water Konsortium with local communities and small traders last night.

Fadillah said the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation was among several ministries involved in a special committee formed to assess the situation.

The committee also includes the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, and Bank Negara Malaysia.

Asked to elaborate further on the upcoming Cabinet discussion, he urged the media to wait for the outcome of the meeting.

Earlier reports indicated that the government would establish a special committee to study the economic implications of the United States–Iran conflict amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported to have said the committee would be chaired by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, working together with Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and other relevant ministers to conduct the assessment. - March 13, 2026
