According to GuangMingDaily, a 26 year old female counsellor in California has been accused of exploiting her position at a juvenile detention facility to groom and sexually abuse a boy who was only 14 at the time. Prosecutors allege that the abuse continued even after the boy was released, with the alleged offences taking place over a three-month period. Following the investigation, the woman was arrested and is now facing multiple felony charges, including possession of child pornography.
According to the New York Post, prosecutors in the San Francisco Bay Area have charged 26-year-old Sofia Ann-Buitron Drotts with several offences, including unlawful sexual intercourse related to the case.
Investigators said Drotts previously worked at a juvenile detention facility in Martinez, California. In 2024, she was assigned to counsel a boy who was then only 14 years old.
Prosecutors allege that after the boy was released from custody, he was sexually abused by Drotts between April 1 and July 14 this year.
Drotts was arrested on July 14 after police received a report from a supervisor in the probation department. The boy's family has since filed a civil lawsuit against the county over the alleged abuse.
John Burris, an attorney representing the boy's family, said Drotts had allegedly been sexually abusing the boy since 2024, when he was only 14 or 15 years old.
According to court documents, Drotts allegedly abused her position as a counsellor during the boy's two-year detention at the juvenile facility by developing an inappropriate emotional relationship with him before allegedly grooming and sexually abusing him.
After the boy was released, Drotts allegedly continued to provide counselling services to him through Contra Costa Health Center, where prosecutors allege that she engaged in an “unlawful sexual relationship” with the teenager.
The court documents further allege that county officials, law enforcement personnel and supervisors failed to recognise the warning signs or properly supervise Drotts, allowing the alleged abuse to continue.
Burris said the county's system had failed to protect his client from the alleged abuse. He added that the family hoped the criminal proceedings would move forward quickly while they continued to pursue their civil lawsuit.
Drotts is also facing additional charges, including sexual assault involving a foreign object, sending obscene material to a minor, oral copulation with a person under 18, and possession of child pornography.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office said in a statement that the Contra Costa County Superior Court will determine Drotts' arraignment date, when she will formally hear the charges against her.
